Welcome to Miami?

Miami. What an interesting place. I'll first brief you on my thoughts of the city, and why the hell i was there.

Miami - For those of you who have been to Dallas and thought the people were pretentious, you need to check out Miami. It makes Dallas look like a Pinto. Maybe it is just the places we went, but a lot of things were very expensive (For example. We went to a very swanky bar, and I wanted to get two bud lights. I figure that would be 10 bucks... so i go on and order four. 32 bucks. aka, 8 dollars for a bud light. Not normal... and i digress). Anyway, I know for sure that Miami is not a place I would choose to live. Visiting is ok, living, not so much.

So why was I in Miami/Ft Lauder dale? My roommate had a little birthday party and invited myself and his other good friends. The following is my interpretation of what happened while I was in Miami... backwards.

Sunday, August 12, 2007
I was molested my a mannequin at a store that sold jeans for $250... I just don't understand how their denim is any different from the GAPs denim. Please explain.
We begin the shopping trip on South Beach by posing withs a sign about bawls. I believe they misspelled bounce.
Saturday, August 11, 2007
The night ended at pretty cool restaurant called... well i don't remember what it was called. Needless to say I had nothing to drink (you will learn later why). I had the Salomon.
Walking to the restaurant, Phil thought it would be funny to take a picture from up high.... very nice.
Saturday afternoon was spent at the beach. I showed off my latest party trick... hula hooping. I challenge anyone, and i will crush you like an ant.
As you can see below, I drank way too much on Friday night.
Friday, August 10, 2007
I sang like a rock star (scary) and partied like one too. Very drunk at this point. We continued to party until 4 am after the limo ride. Holla.
I got very confused at one point in the night and thought I was a model. Here is my new pose, it's called "Black Titanium"
This one is called "Look at my butt, my butt, my butt, my butt"
This is the most artistic one, most commonly known as "I piss in the Atlantic Ocean, Beat it"
You can make up a name for this one if you want.
Surprise... i like the open mouth smile
Do not attempt to flip your computer around, this picture was taken upside down. For some reason i thought it was the coolest thing at the time.
Dinner at the hella nice restaurant. Food was good. Service nice. Company... great.
Posing at the restaurant. Pretty sober at this point.
Prior to getting to the restaurant, we had to fix our hair and have a few beers so we could try very hard to fit in with the miamians..Chillin in the back of the limo on the way to the restaurant.
This is how we do it.We get into the limo and proceed to South Beach. NO alcohol has been consumed for me at this point.
Waiting for girls to get ready and chunking the deuce.Overall, the trip was great. the end.

Weekend Wrap It Up...

It was another crazy weekend... but for sooo many reasons you don't even know. Friday I went to a nice little dinner at Sals with my friend D, we split a bottle of wine. That was supposed to be the end. However, some of Drew's friends were at the Ginger Man... so we went there for a couple beers. That was also supposed to be the end. My roommate showed up and we decided we needed some grapevine action. So we headed to the G-vine for some late night fun times.

Saturday was the big Cystic Fibrosis Pub Crawl. I put a team together with 9 other folks:

As you can see, we dressed up in crazy hats and mustaches. Which made us a reasonably big hit amongst the other crawlers. I was lucky enough to be Robin Hood and at one point i got to be a cowboy (the 5 things listed on my sleeve are the bars we went to, in a particular order).

I did some long pour chugging, which was interesting...

And i got a little wet...

Apparently I ate some candy off a girls candy necklace.... GROSS!

By the end of the crawl... apparently i was a liar that knows gang signs with pizza sauce on my shirt

All in all, we had an awesome time that i recommend to anyone and everyone. We had several crazy chugging contests and lots of people loving the staches.

Later that night my roommate and I had a party at our place for his bday. We ended up staying up forever, and i had a little too much to drink. My drunk hula hoop skills entertained people for a while. All in all, good times.

Next post will contain pics from miami a few weeks ago... wait for it.

Where you been

It's Monday morning after a quick but fun weekend and i realized that its been a while since Gekius has posted. This is what it has been doing.

- Last Friday I was asked by a fellow hockey player if i would like to help coach a Bantam A hockey team in Plano. I thought about it for a few hot minutes, and next thing i know, I'm an Assistant Coach. Not a lot of responsibility or anything, mostly just helping with drills in practice and running the defense during games. So in a way I'm a defensive coordinator with a nice salary. I'm going to have to attend 3 all day training classes in September so that i can be level 3 certified. Should be fun to see how well i do, especially since kids still kind of freak the hell out of me.
- This Friday I'm going to Fort Lauder dale/Miami for a few days to celebrate my roommates birthday. I still need to get him a present, although i have a good idea what i want to get him. We shall see.
- Work has been going very well, although I'm in Fort Worth, the work is very busy and challenging which is what I love.
- I'll be booking my flight to Argentina this week which is very exciting. I'll be going in April of next year and hopefully the trip will go smoothly.

Other then that, not too much has been going on. My room needs a good cleaning, but i figure there is always time for that later. This is where I've been. Peace.

Long's Peak Expedition

Well... not to disappoint anyone, but I survived my first big hike/climb of Long's Peak. It was a very long hike and the name does some justification. Here is how the weekend went down...

Friday night, Derek, Shant, and I left for Denver Colorado. We all used upgrade points and got to sit in first class. I'm pretty sure the people around us were somewhat annoyed since we talked the entire time... but it was good. We each had two beers with our fabulous meal (Fabulous may be an overstatement).

After landing in Denver and picking up our baggage, Webb picked us up and we headed to REI. Arrived 10 minutes before they closed and i was able to pick up a cheap pair of sunglasses (which came in handy). After that we stopped by a well known burger place and had a beer and a burger. All is good and back to the hotel we went. We were able to stay in a suite at the West Inn Downtown (Courtesy of the Green Dot).

Saturday we woke up around 8 am... packed up our stuff and headed to Boulder. We ate at a breakfast place called The Buff and had I ate some excellent french toast. From there we stopped at a famous sandwich place and to pick up our lunch which we would end up eating on the mountain. From Boulder... we drove about another hour to Rocky Mountain National Park. Drove around there for a while and saw lots and lots of people. At that point it was about 1 o'clock. At this time we remembered that at 130, they would be giving away our campsite reservation if someone was there to take it. So we headed down to the office in the Expedition and made it there about 145. A dilemma arose.

Long's peak has two main camp areas. One called Goblins Forest and another called the Boulder Field. Goblins Forest is a .5 mile hike from the trail head... while the Boulder Field is 6 miles from the trail head. We wanted to stay at the Boulder Field, but there was only one site that could handle one tent. We had one three person tent, and one 2 person tent. We opted to cram four people in the 3 person tent and make the hike.

At this point it is about 2 pm when this decision is made. So we have about a 6 mile hike with a vertical gain of 3,350 feet. We reach the trail head around 3 pm with all our gear and we are ready to go. Early on in the trail there were several spots with little waterfalls as seen below.

As we are walking, we realize at this point, everyone is on there way down... and we are probably the only ones going up at this point since it is so late in the day. After walking about a mile or so, we encounter a crazy man telling us the thunderstorms are rolling and we should turn around. Webb questions his judgement and we continue on. Rain starts to come down very lightly. Then we reached the tree line. At this point there is snow randomly spread throughout the area, but very little left.

At about mile three we could see some storms developing but figured it was best to continue as long as we moved quickly. We thought about it as you can see below.

The rain started coming down, then it turned to freezing rain, and then we realized we should probably get some shelter. The wind was blowing us around and making us pretty cold. Luckily there was a huge rock structure that had a small cave that we were able to use as shelter in order to repack and grab a snack. We stayed there for about 15 minutes to let the rain die out, and then continued on. I guess in a way that guy that warned us was some what correct, but we survived and it was actually kind of fun to experience a problem. Below is me deep in the cave and Shant closest to the camera.

The weather got colder as we went up and breathing became more difficult. We eventually made it to the Boulder Field area and an orange ten came in site in the distance. This was our campground. The sun was going down and darkness was coming. The plan was for two of to set up the tent, two people to pump water to filter it, then to cook dinner and pass out. Myself and Shant were in charge of setting up the ten which we did very easily. Derek and Webb got the water and then we cooked some Kuss Kuss and chicken that was good considering we were all very hungry and slightly dehydrated. The water was freezing cold that we drank since it was basically melted snow from higher up on the mountain.

After eating and wrapping everything up, Webb and I head to the outhouse (yes, believe it or not, they have outhouses at this elevation). It is at this point that Webb pulls me aside to tell me that he is concerned with Shant's health. He was having a much harder time breathing than the rest of us, and was freezing cold. It looked to be early signs of HAPE. If he began coughing excessively after laying down to sleep, this would be the real sign that we would have to hike down at night in order to get him to a better altitude. At this point, I was thinking there would be a chance we would have to go down that night. After getting back to the tent, it was time for bed. Shant and Derek were already in their bags, Shant was shivering like crazy. Lucky for us we had 4 people in a three person tent, so the body warmth of us all was able to help him warm up eventually. (pic of our tight sleeping arrangments)

Sleeping. This is something I was not able to do very well that night. With Webb's snoring and everyone else's inability to sleep, it was not the best sleep ever. I continuously woke up with shortness of breath and was forced to take deep breaths in order to get back to regular breathing. Altitude sickness also kicked in right before I went to sleep. The headaches came and went with severe pain which made sleeping not very easy. I do recall waking up at 1130 PM to go to the restroom, there were so many stars it was amazing. Most likely more than I have ever seen since we were in the middle of no where.

5:30 AM came very quickly (The pic above is the sun coming up over the mountain, difficult to tell, but i'm peeing in the urinal in the outhouse while webb is in the one next to me), we had to get up and start getting ready to be on the trail by 6:15. NO breakfast was needed, just pumping water and and packing up our packs. We brought two liters per person which was pretty necessary. Up we went through the boulder field and up to the Keyhole (picture below).

After reaching the Keyhole, Shant had had enough. In my mind the next piece was probably more than i could handle, but i decided it would be come to push my limits. After the Keyhole, there is really only 1 more mile to go, but more than 1000 ft of elevation to go up. The terrain between the Keyhole and the Trough doesn't really have a name, but definitely has some ridge line exposure. At one point, we noticed some iron bars coming out of the rock about a foot. We asked Webb about them, and this was his answer: "Most likely those are old cables that used to connect things, or possibly this is a spot that a lot of people fall off and die, so the bars can be used for support." Not something I wanted to know, but I made it past them. After the section of ridge line, we finally reached the trough (Pic below is of me scrambling up the trough, pictures do not justify the amazing views and steepness in the mountain)

The trough starts around 13,300 feet and increases 600 feet reasonably quickly. The trough consisted of lots of loose rock at a steep angle which made foot placement very necessary. Few icy patches still existed which we avoided. We made it to the top of the trough and to the start of the narrows. The narrows is only a 250 yard piece and after that the homestretch to the top. After looking at the narrows, and then feeling how rubbery my legs felt, Derek and I decided it would be best to head down. Webb continued and succeeded. As I look back, I feel like i should have pushed my limits more and continued up. The weather was perfect, but my legs were hurting and my mind headache was hurting. My mind over powered myself and i got psyched out. Derek and I started heading down... which was way harder than going up (pic below is Team SCS on the way down).

Overall, the trip was a great success in my mind. Going down the mountain was very rough on the knees, but we made it down in about 3 hours. Breathing was a lot easier, and headaches were all gone. I recommend this challenge to anyone, I don't recommend carrying as much stuff as I did.

Next mountain... we'll see. Maybe completing a fourteener would be good for me first before I move on to anything to excessive.

FCP

It has been a week full of learning and good times I guess is one way to put it. I started at my new client on Monday... we will call them FCP. They are a Retail Electricity provider that is looking to move into the wholesale market. However, the way that energy is bought and sold is changing from a Zonal Market to a Nodal Market in order to make the market more efficient and supposedly be better for everyone. My role will initially be to gather the business requirements for these changes and create a document outlining the scheduling part. After that, hopefully, FCP will select us to do the development of the system.

Anyway, tonight i leave for Colorado. We are going to Long's Peak and hopefully the weather will cooperate and there will not be any snow. Should be a good time.

Mozzarella Portabella Chicen Sausagella

Last night I created a new creation. I went to whole foods and bought a portabella mushroom top, Italian chicken sausage, olive oil, and mozzarella cheese. First I sliced the sausage into about half inch thick pieces and threw it in a pan and cooked it for about 5 minutes (or until golden chicken brown). After that I placed the sausage on top of the mushroom to cover the entire thing. Cooked the two together for about 20 minutes... added some cheese on top... and Voila, Mozzarella Portabella Chicken Sausagella. Try it out... hopefully ours will look better than mine:

Last Day At Ameriprise

If I had two other co-workers walking out with me today, I would imagine our conversation going like this:

BRIAN
Wow, our last day at Ameriprise.

COWORKER1
I can't believe they had security escort us out. Not like we're gonna steal something.

COWORKER2
I stole something.

BRIAN
Oh yeah. I guess we all did.

COWORKER2
No, I stole something else.

COWORKER1
What did you steal?

PETER
We'll call it a going away present.

[Scene A field. They drop the printer. COWORKER1 stomps on it four times and BRIAN, eight times. COWORKER2 hands COWORKER1 a bat. He hits the printer twice and BRIAN takes over. He starts to punch it. COWORKER1 and COWORKER2 pull him away, but he runs back to destroy the evil printer.]

Upgrade odds

This has been the week full of upgrades. Typically whenever I fly NWA (the airline, not the rap group)... i get upgraded on my 6 am Tuesday flight (85% chance of upgrade). Yesterday I was upgraded and it felt great as usual.

Yesterday afternoon when i checked into my hotel... once again, upgraded to the executive floor. This tends to happen about 70% of these time since i'm a Diamond Hilton Member (AKA travel bad ass).

The week was topped off today when i checked my info for my return flight tomorrow, and what do you know... upgraded again. This odds of this are about 1% since it has only happened one time in the past 18 months. What a way to close out my traveling with two first class seats. Hopefully the food will be tasty on the flight home. That is the least they can do... right?

The End of The Begining

Minneapolis is coming to an end, my time has expired and it is time for a drastic change in my lifestyle. The infamous in-town project. Something i haven't truly experienced in 18 months. No more frequent flyer miles, no more hotel points, my status is going to fall faster than a penny from the empire state building. My therapist says I just need to start breathing and i will make it through these rough times.

The following are events that took place in Minneapolis, that I won't forget:

1. Feeling stupid and knowing nothing about the financial services industry. Luckily I had a lot of great support that believed in my abilities.
2. Drinking Fat Cat beer. Don't do it. It tastes like shit. Even though their slogan is "It's really really good"... i promise, they are lying.
3. The apartment at Loring Park with the sweet view of some crazy church
4. Walking to work in the snow when it was -10 degrees outside and my hands and ears began hurting almost instantly.
5. Watching a dinner date vomit in a trash can.
6. Going on a date with a Minnesotan country girl who was very clueless and very strange
7. Getting drunk on Mardi Gras night at The Drink and taking shots of jager
8. Valentines Day in Minneapolis - Two male coworkers and myself wanted to go somewhere nice to eat. We walked in to a nice Italian restaurant, noticed that there were a lot of couples, and then realized... oh shit... it's Valentines day isn't it. From there we went to a bar and had burgers and beer. The waitress convinced us to go to the pajama party that was going on downstairs. One of my coworkers thought things were going well, so he went home and returned in his boxers and tshirt. He came back in the 15 degree weather and told us to come on in. Asked her to dance. She was too busy. It was fun as hell though either way. Walking home in the cold with him in his boxers was pretty funny too.
9. The night i got pretty damn wasted and decided to move and knock over construction cones at 2 am. Little did i know that the guy that set them up was watching me. He drove up next to me and asked why i did it... me being drunk and scared stood there and said nothing, my boy D stood up for me and basically told the guy to f' off. It was great.
10. My 25th Birthday -The team here in Minnesota made me a cake and had me blow out candles. So cute.
11. Going to the mall of America... borrrrrring.
12. Eating a Jucy Lucy... tasssssssssty.
13. Having a prostitute try and pick me up after my Montreal trip on my way home on hennepin ave.... good times.
14. Watching the Dallas Mavericks lose game 6 of the NBA finals in the NBA Bar with tons of Miami Heat fans... not so good.
15. Getting drunk at Key's bar... and then bar hopping in downtown with Ameriprise folks
16. Going to The Drink where they had free food buffet from 530-730 and happy hour. Spending our dinner per diem on drinks.
17. Eating the biggest (not best) burrito I've ever had a Chino Latino in Uptown.
18. Watching the Twins play in the toilet bowl
19. Running around the University of Minnesota and feeling like a college kid again.
20. Ice Fishing... wait, never made it that far
21. The frozen Mississippi
22. Two Words... Double Decker Skyway
23. Seeing Robert Earl Keen and Cross Canadian Ragweed play to a bunch of Minnesotans
24. Damian and Jim, the guys that work the bar at Zelo (the best Italian restaurant in DT Minneapolis). Jim always talking about football and the cowboys, and me acting like i care/know anything about it.
25. The peeps at the hotels that know me.

As of now i only have 8 days left including today... only a few more nights to make memorable things happen (three to be exact).

Weekend Wrap Up

The weekend was pretty nice and relaxing I guess one could say. Friday night consisted of me going out and have a good time with some work friends and some old friends from college. I stayed in reasonable Control. Saturday was all about the laundry and doing some initial cleaning. Also went to the Gingerman for a couple of beers which was nice. Saturday night consisted of Joe T's and a movie (analyze that). All very tasty and fun. I got home and was dead tired. Sunday involved more relaxation. All in all, it was some good mostly sober time. Great deal.

Got some pics from San Fran (In case you forgot when i went, it was about a month ago when i got drunk and woke up in San Fran... one of the most random trips ever).

Day 1 Morning: Anchor Steam Beer and a Chowder Bowl... tasty

Sitting in Forest Gump's shoes at Bubba and Gumps

Alcatraz is behind me... Holla Back Clint!

Golden Gate... it's what it do

Day 2: Winery Number One

Day Two: Winery Number Two - Notice How Red I am from the bike ride on golden gate the day before
Feeling good...

In the Gondola up to Winery 3

Winery 3 - Amazing view... shitty wine
Winery 3

Mountains + Casinos + Lake = Tahoe

Sunburn, hungover, and ready to go out in Tahoe

That's pretty much the trip. It was a great time and I am looking forward to going again.

Also, Congratulations to my sister and her man, they got engaged yesterday. Looks like I get to be an usher... wait for it.

Get Ready To Drive

Just found out that my new client will very likely be located in West Texas (AKA SW Fort Worth, Tx). This will be 46 miles one way from my place... so 92 miles a day round trip. I'll be burning about 3 gallons a day... 15 gallons a week...putting some hella miles on my Camry, but those things are built to last.

On the bright side, rumor has it that there is a Hooters close to the client's office. Chicken Wangs, Fries, and Beer are in the near future. I can just taste the fat at the tip of my tounge... mmmmm ... gross.

Long's Peak

Today I booked a flight to Colorado. My climbing buddy and I will be attempting to climb Longs Peak. From what I've read, it isn't that difficult, but from what I've heard, there are some difficult parts to the climb/hike. It should be a fun trip with stories I'm sure (assuming I make it back alive...jk)

Longs Peak stands at 14,259 feet. This will be my first Fourteener (Mountains above 14,000 feet). From there I want to attempt Mt. Whitney (14,497 ft) followed by Pico De Orizaba (18490 ft, 3rd highest in North America). Make it happen.

4 nights left in the great MSP

They say all good things have to come to an end, and my days of traveling are coming to an end. Here are the things I will miss:

- Getting in on Tuesday morning at 11:00 AM to the client
- Leaving on Thursday at 3:00 PM to catch my flight.
- The not so challenging less than 40 hours per week job
- The nice people I work with
- Free food and booze
- Hotel points/Status
- Airline miles/Status

Things I won't miss:
- Waking up at 6 am to catch my 740 flight on Tuesday morning
- Getting home at 9pm from my 520 flight on Thursday nights
- Sleeping in a nasty hotel bed
- Riding in the most uncomfortable seat next to big bertha on a flight to DFW

Going from a traveling project to an in town project can be explained best by this article.

I have four nights left in Minnesota including tonight... and here is what i expect to do:
TONIGHT: Eat at Fogo De Chao... i've never eaten there and I hear it is good. So i figure i should try it.
WEDNESDAY: See a show at the Orpheum. It's a famous theatre here and Mama Mia is playing (I have a feeling anything with that name I will hate, but I might give it a shot)
TUESDAY: One last run in Minnesota. Visit the U (University of Minnesota for those who don't know) and purchase a yellow University of Minnesota Hockey T shirt (Something I've always wanted).
WEDNESDAY: Going away party for me. Enough said.

As you can see, I'm going to experience what i can in my last four nights. I'll give a recap of the past 18 months that I've been here at some point in the next week. Just wait for it.

Tuesday, June 05, 2007

And... I'm back.

After over 125 flights in the past 18 months, I have only encountered about two delays and never had a flight cancelled. Since yesterday all that changed and all has gone down hill. After some crazy storms at DFW yesterday, my flight was cancelled after I got to sit in the airport for about three hours. Rebooking my flight to tonight was easy, they were able to get me a good seat on the 4:45 flight (being platinum is great and I'm going to miss it someday). Once again today, I was the lucky winner of a delayed flight. Although it was only delayed for an hour, but still, I spent about another two hours in the airport tonight.

With all these new things happening to me, I'm doing another first with my traveling experiences. Room service. In the past 18 months and who knows how many nights in a hotel room, I've never had room service up until about 5 minutes ago. I just ordered, so i have no idea how good/bad the food will be. The reason I've never done room service is that i like to make myself get up and walk around the city to find food. Tonight, I just felt different. Maybe it's because i only have 1-3 more weeks left of traveling and i felt like i have to do this now while i can... who knows.

In other news, I have left Sprint. They t'd me off the other day and now I'm going to show them. By leaving them. That will teach them to not listen to me and be helpful when i'm in a rough situation. I will be entering the world of T-Mobile with a Blackberry Pearl. I've heard good (and a few bad) things about this phone and look forward to putting it through the Gekius Test.

In other news... well... I actually don't think there is really any other news. It's Tuesday, 1020 PM and my room service just got here, so scoot along.

Oh yeah, if you are bored and like the movie Mary Poppins, check out this trailer:
